PresentationThe degree program in Medicine and Surgery offers students a sound theoretical and practical preparation in all fields of medicine. Graduates will acquire the knowledge and skills required to formulate and/or apply original ideas in the context of biomedical and translational research. They will also be able to independently search for scientific information and to identify patients’ problems and propose suitable treatment based on scientific thought and research. Graduates will acquire basic professional competencies in the fields of Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as in medico-surgical specialties. They will also develop the ability to identify and critically evaluate data concerning the health and illness of an individual patient, from a clinical point of view, and with a socio-cultural vision. Graduates of Medicine and Surgery can therefore reach a level of professional and operational autonomy which will permit them to confront and responsibly solve health problems from a preventive, diagnostic, prognostic, therapeutic and rehabilitative approach.
Course contentMedicine and Surgery is a six-year program, and consists in 36 integrated courses. The first two years deal mainly with the fundamental sciences such as Biology and Genetics, Chemical Biology, Histology, Anatomy, Human Physiology, and Human Physiopathology. Beginning in the third year, students will study applied clinical disciplines such as Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Pediatrics, Gynecology, Neurology, and Psychology, as well as medical and surgical specialties such as Dermatology, Visual Diseases, and Orthopedics. The program also covers public health disciplines, such as General and Applied Hygiene, and Legal and Occupational Medicine. Additionally, students will learn the fundamental methods for laboratory analyses and imaging diagnostics, and the principles for the application of biomedical technologies to medicine. Lectures and laboratory instruction will be balanced with professional internship placements in university facilities and other institutions approved by the university. A portion of the clinical placements will be performed locally in clinics of general practitioners, and local and regional health facilities. Emphasis will be placed on establishing relationships with patients, including the psychological aspect, and on communication with family members. Lastly, the ability to collaborate with various health professionals as part of a team, to recognize community health problems, and to take appropriate action, complete the training and professional development of graduates.
Career optionsGraduates in Medicine and Surgery will work as physicians-surgeons in various capacities and in a variety of clinical, health care and biomedical settings. The profession of physician-surgeon not only involves the diagnosis and treatment of all organic and functional diseases in humans, but also the prevention of disease and illness in both individuals and the community (for example screening campaigns). Upon completion of the program, a qualified physician surgeon can draw upon all the diagnostic and therapeutic methods available to ensure the best level of health in patients.
