The fast territorial, demographic and climate changes occurred in several geographical areas of the Earth pose new challenges to the Civil Engineer. The modern Civil Engineer is expected to build functional and safe structures and infrastructures, controlling risks and uncertainty, and aiming at a sustainable development, thus exerting an increasing influence on the social and economic choices made by the Countries. Solving the new problems requires scientific knowledge and state-of-the-art technologies. A broad vision of the territorial systems and the interactions among the man-made structures and the natural systems in which they integrate is also essential. The Master's Degree in Civil Engineering offered at UNIMORE provides a stable and sound professional training aimed at enabling the graduate-to-be to identify the new issues and solve them as effectively and economically as possible.

Course content

The master's degree program in civil engineering includes fundamental subjects of structural, hydraulic, transport, materials, and power engineering. The study programme is designed for first-cycle degree graduates already possessing appropriate physical and mathematical grounding and consolidated knowledge of Civil Engineering subjects. During the course of studies, the knowledge and skills required for the advanced engineering of structures and infrastructures are provided, focusing on the seismic risk, the water resource management and the hydrological risk control, the use of new materials and energy management. Students are oriented towards the most modern approaches for solving traditional issues and complex new ones, most often interfacing different subjects. They are also encouraged to develop a pronounced sense of self-direction that will find its full application when preparing the master's degree thesis on a specific topic chosen by the individual student.

Career options

Graduates in Civil Engineering will be able to work for professional studies and engineering companies, building companies and companies providing maintenance operations on civil works, infrastructures and plants, as well as agencies responsible for territorial planning, risk assessment and control, and service management entities and consortia. Civil Engineering graduates are trained to operate at the highest levels, both as self-employed professionals or in companies and public administration, even at an international level, combining engineering skills with organisational and coordination abilities. The master's degree in civil engineering allows students to access higher education programmes, such as doctoral research programmes both in Italy and abroad, an essential requirement to pursue high- profile professions within national and international engineering entities and companies, as well as to become a university professor.
