Presentation

The Second-Cycle Degree in Industrial Biotechnology offers a highly specialized program that prepare students to use biological systems and molecular and cellular biology techniques for the production of goods and services in the different industrial biotechnology sectors. The specific objectives of the program have been formulated to form professional figures that can design, analyze, and optimize complex biological systems for applicative and productive purposes in the chemical, pharmaceutical, health, food, environmental remediation and renewable energy within the industrial areas of interest. The program is supported by close collaboration with national and international research and industrial partners. A considerable part of the course work is conducted in research laboratories equipped with technologically advanced scientific instruments. Industrial Biotechnology also offers an excellent opportunity to start a company (i.e. start up/spin off) through the development of innovative ideas.

Course content

Students enrolled in this program will acquire theoretical knowledge as well as operational and laboratory skills to employ microorganisms in the fermentative production of biomass, metabolites, and proteins, and to apply experimental techniques for the analysis, modification, and improvement of bio-products. Students will also be familiar with the principles and methods of molecular modeling, macromolecular planning, and computer simulation of molecular functional properties. Graduates will be involved in groundbreaking biotechnological activities, including training on the production of nanometric bio-devices for electronic and molecular sensing, of nanostructured adhesives, and of cellular systems for industrial applications. The program also provides knowledge on innovative aspects of microbial biotechnologies and of bio-catalysis for application in the production of chemical, pharmaceutical, health, food, environmental, and renewable energy goods and services. A considerable part of the course work will involve laboratory activities to acquire advanced experimental techniques and working models that will accelerate the progression to the industrial research and development environments. The program also aims at promoting internationalization through the partnership with European and international research centers and industries.

Career options

The master degree program forms industrial biotechnologists with a strong background in general scientific disciplines, a specialized knowledge of complex biological systems and techniques, and the ability to perform high-level functions in basic and applied research, in the development of innovative technologies, and in planning and management of industrial biotechnological processes. Graduates will be able to apply their skills to autonomously conduct laboratory activities and to take on entrepreneurial roles in biotechnological companies and research centers. Graduates will exploit their competencies in the chemical, pharmaceutical, health, food, environmental remediation, and renewable energy industrial areas. They will also have the knowledge to work in the protection of intellectual property in patent offices. Finally, graduates can take the State Examination to exercise the profession of Senior Biologist (DPR no. 328 of June 5, 2001).
