Presentation

The Second-Cycle Degree in Industrial Biotechnology offers a highly specialized program aimed at preparing students with professional skills for rapid entry into the world of work, or to continue their studies in research and development. The specific objectives of the program have been formulated on the basis of the most recent developments in Industrial Biotechnology and are supported by close collaboration with local scientific and productive activities. A considerable part of the course work is conducted in research laboratories equipped with technologically advanced scientific instruments. Industrial Biotechnology also offers an excellent opportunity to start a company through the development of innovative ideas.

Course content

Students enrolled in this program will acquire theoretical knowledge as well as operational and laboratory skills relating to the use of microorganisms for the fermentative production of biomass, metabolites, and proteins, and on techniques for the investigation, modification, and improvement of the properties of bio-products. Students will also be familiar with the principles and methods of molecular modeling, macromolecular planning, and functional computer simulation. Graduates will be involved in groundbreaking biotechnological activities, including training on the production of nanometric bio-devices for electronic and molecular sensing, in the production of nanostructured adhesives, and the growth and differentiation of stem cells for the production of epithelial tissues. The program also provides knowledge regarding the most innovative fundamentals and aspects of microbial biotechnologies and of biocatalysts in the agro-industrial, food, and pharmaceutical sectors. A considerable part of the course work will involve laboratory activities to develop the acquisition of more advanced techniques and to facilitate entry into the fields of industrial research and development.

Career options

The degree program is aimed at producing industrial biotechnologists who are professionals with a strong command of general scientific disciplines, specialized knowledge, and the ability to perform high-level functions in research, in the development of innovative technologies, and in the planning and management of industrial biotechnological systems. Graduates can apply their planning skills to autonomously conduct laboratory activities aimed at basic and applied research. Furthermore, their competencies will permit them to play a key role in the industrial sector where microorganisms and enzymes are used to obtain products and large-scale biological matrix devices. Graduates can perform their activities in the agro-food and environmental sectors, and in the biotechnological production of intermediaries for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. The program is aimed at promoting internationalization through Faculty relations with laboratories of other European and international universities, for the purpose of encouraging the mobility of second-cycle students and facilitating their entry into higher level university programs. Graduates will be prepared to take on entrepreneurial roles in biotechnological companies. They can also work in the protection of intellectual property in patent offices. Finally, graduates can take the State Examination to exercise the profession of Senior Biologist (DPR no. 328 of June 5, 2001).
