Graduates in Engineering for Environmental Sustainability are professionals qualified to manage compatible ecosystems in the environment and local territory. They will acquire planning and modeling competencies to permit a systemic vision of sustainable solutions, to develop an environmental assessment of plans and programs of potential impact on the environment, and also to plan and execute civil works, environmental plans, and installations, for the purpose of protecting the local territory. Using interpretative skills acquired from their engineering training, as well as interdisciplinary competencies, they will be able to conduct integrated environmental assessments of large works, regulatory plans, and development projects, which are strategic for the sustainability of the urban and local environment. Students will also receive in-depth training in environmental engineering disciplines, with a view to understanding the conditions and requirements for sustainability, even in specialized applied, and research sectors present in engineering departments and connected to local productive contexts.

Course content

The program deepens the students’ knowledge of Environmental and Territorial Engineering to develop planning and evaluation skills in particularly important areas for the profession, with the contribution of experimental research activities conducted by the Engineering Departments. It addresses the advanced processing of environmental data, which is essential for environmental and territorial monitoring and the planning of environmental systems. Territorial protection is studied in hydrological and prospecting terms and to monitor hydrogeological disruption, using geomatics with precision positioning and GPS location as well as restoration techniques of contaminated sites through the study of the chemistry of pollutants and environmental impact monitoring instruments (Life Cycle Assessment). Environmental planning is an underlying requirement for integrated environmental assessment of plans and programs (strategic environmental assessment) and is supported by courses in environmental economics, services management and energy management techniques with particular attention to renewable resources and systems). The program also includes the study of waste treatment technologies and environmental reactors. An internship will offer students the possibility to work on a project of environmental relevance with public or private bodies, or in the university.

Career options

Graduates in Engineering for Environmental Sustainability find jobs as planners and coordinators in the productive innovation of environmentally sustainable goods and services, in the planning and management of infrastructures, and in environmental protection and restoration. Graduates can work as self-employed professionals, or as employees with managerial responsibilities, in public and private centers and research laboratories, in service companies or enterprises, in the design, planning, execution, and management of projects such as the following: environmental and local oversight and monitoring systems, initiatives for the environmental reclamation and implementation of technologies, systems necessary for the environmental clean up and organic waste reuse, the implementation and management of environmental detection systems, soil protection, recovery and recycling of materials and waste disposal, energy optimization and innovation, the study and evaluation of the impact and environmental sustainability of projects and works, the formulation of eco-budgets, and the determination of appropriate systems for the management of environmental quality. They will also be able to take part in joint ventures relating to civil works and construction projects. The program prepares graduates for the profession of Engineer, specializing in problems relating to environmental monitoring and the development of sustainable projects. There are excellent job prospects both in Italy and abroad.
