Description

Eductional goals and scientific topics
The environmental emergency situations require the formation of new researchers and consultants able to understand and interpret the delicate relationships which govern the earth system from both an abiotic and biotic viewpoint.
The development of new materials with controlled properties and wanted applications is fundamental to approaching the global challenges in strategic fields, i.e. chemistry, pharmacology, electronics, green energy and waste management.
The research doctor will be able to operate in one or more of the following fields: definition of processes regulating the transfer of elements and compounds from geosphere to hydro- and biosphere forecasting; prevention and mitigation of natural risks; identification and optimal use of resources; study, conservation and appraisal of cultural assets; environmental impact and sustainability of human activities; chemical sustainable strategies; preparation and characterization of materials with innovative functional properties; devices and methodologies for electrochemical sensing suitable to work in real systems; photophisics and photochemistry methodologies for materials environmental appications; computational multiscale strategies for the study of materials; chemometrics, multivariate analysis of signals and images and themes related to Big Data and Industria 4.0.
In addition, the research doctor will be able to manage and communicate his/her own scientific results and identify their technological applications.

Professional opportunities
The specific interdisciplinary character of this doctorate allows students to acquire a sound preparation both in experimental and computational fields and high flexibility which guarantee an adequate placement in the work world.
The main professional prospects of doctorate holders are:
- In public research boards, universities, national and international laboratories. Types of placement: research, teaching activities, management of research services, technological transfer, scientific popularization.
- In territorial services and boards (agencies for environmental protection and sustainable development, laboratories and centres for industrial research or technological transfer, public boards and institutions for cultural development). Types of placement: management of research services and consulting.
- In industrial companies. Types of placement: research and development of new materials, bio-molecules and devices, process control, management of technological research services, production and protection of intellectual property.
