Description

The PhD Program in Neurosciences aims at the preparation of researchers with a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach of the various aspects of neuroscience and behavioural sciences, providing a high degree of specialization in research in these areas.
In parallel, a multidisciplinary training will be offered in order to give a unitary view of the problems that the doctor of neuroscience will face in practice.
Specific training is achieved by associating the PhD student to a research group which where he/she will learn all the necessary technical and manual skills to develop specific research line in their chosen field. The part of training that ensures each student multidisciplinary training is carried out both on a personal basis and through different types of integrated educational activities for acquisition of knowledge of the problems and specific research techniques of the various fields of the PhD School (molecular neurobiology, neuroanatomy, neurochemistry, neuropharmacology, neurophysiology, cognitive neuroscience, behaviuoral science and cognitive psychology).

The course consists of 2 curricula:
- Neurosciences, with a strong interdisciplinary approach (from molecular and cellular neurosciences, to neuro and psychopharmacology, to cognitive and social neurosciences, to psychology, and to clinical neurosciences).
- Behavioural Sciences, focused on the study of the risk factors of emotional, cognitive and personality development, and of the main psychic disorders.

The student will be inserted in a network of relationships and exchanges among the participating groups and national and international research and higher education structures (periods abroad are encouraged), and with public and private bodies.

Thematics:
- Study of the central nervous system in rodents, non-human primates and humans, using techniques of neuroanatomy, neuropharmacology, molecular biology, electrophysiology, behavioural analysis and brain imaging.
- Study of neural correlates of pathologies of neurological and psychiatric interest, such as dementia, epilepsy, sleep disorders, autism spectrum syndrome, schizophrenia and drug addiction.
- Study of the development of communication and relational skills and on the evaluation of risk factors and protection of emotional, cognitive and personality development in childhood and early adulthood.
- Study of the endogenous (genetic and behavioral) and exogenous (environmental and socio-relational) risk factors for the main mental disorders.

Career opportunities include:
- Basic researcher (employment: academic or industrial research).
- Clinical researcher, psychologist or neuropsychologist (employment: applied research, planning and consulting; sector: academy, health, industry, public health and national and international bodies for the protection of the integrity of development in childhood and adolescence).
- Medical or pharmaceutical biologist or biotechnologist (employment: applied research, planning and consulting in academic, healthcare or industrial domains).
