The course deals with subjects on Mechanical and Vehicle Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Materials Engineering.

In the present Cycle, the Course is structured around three curricula: the first one is named Industry 4.0, another is named Vehicle Engineering, and the third one is named Civil and Environmental Engineering. This characterization responds to a specific need of the territory, and in particular to industrial interests (local but not exclusively), aimed at deepening the research topics related to the design and development of all vehicle components.

The educational objectives, common to all PhD students, are: advanced training in the various areas of industrial and environmental engineering; education to the scientific and technological research; development of the attitude to international scientific cooperation; ability to interact with the industrial and economic district. More specifically, the issues considered fall within the specific areas listed below. The particular Industry 4.0 curriculum characterizes the transversal nature of the issues that distinguish the E4E Doctoral School (Engineering for Economics - Economics for Engineering), of which this Course is part.

Entering into details, the PhD issues fall into the specific areas provided below.

For the Industry 4.0 curriculum:
- Mechanical engineering; issues on aspects relating to the design of machines and systems, with particular reference to the skills connected with the thermodynamic, structural, technological, and functional aspects, and to the thermal and structural optimization of the machines.
- Materials Engineering; topics on aspects relating to the design and characterization of innovative and high-performance materials for industry, study of materials and technologies related to biomechanics and bioengineering, etc.

For the Vehicle Engineering curriculum:
- Topics on all aspects relating to the design, optimization and verification of vehicle components and systems. Theoretical, numerical and experimental analysis of problems related to the engine, chassis, power supply, transmission, etc. Detailed studies on side issues such as vibrations, mechanical stress, vehicle comfort, etc.

For the Civil and Environmental Engineering curriculum:
- Topics related to anti-seismic design, energy efficiency, dynamics of pollutants, hydraulics, geomatics, waste management, etc.

Especially for the Industry 4.0 curriculum, a strong synergy with economic doctorates is expected, in anticipation of acquiring interdisciplinary skills relating to Operations and the analysis of industrial costs enabled by the advanced and intensive use of PLM, MES and ERP systems, advanced data analytics and life cycle management platforms.

The education and research path will focus on industrial robotics, on integrated design and advanced simulation, on the design, development and management of product-process-service platforms enabled by IoT and User Centered Design technologies, on advanced cognitive and intelligent production systems based on digital twin, energy efficiency and sustainability.

This PhD Course aims at becoming a regional reference with regard to the research activities in Industrial and Environmental engineering within the Emilia Romagna county.
