Presentation

Our study program in Medical Biotechnologies is a highly specialized program which offers the possibility to learn and apply the most modern biomedical and pharmaceutical research technologies for the purpose of protecting human health. The sectors of medical biotechnologies are rapidly expanding and have important socio-economic repercussions. A considerable part of the program is conducted in research laboratories which are equipped with technologically advanced scientific instrumentation. These laboratory courses are in applied disciplines of national and international relevance.

Course content

This graduate level program is organized into four semesters and 11 mandatory courses. In the first three semesters the student will be exposed to biotechnological applications and perspectives in the following sectors: physiology, pathology, structure, function and analysis of the human genome, advanced molecular diagnostic techniques, development and production of stem cell tissues for regenerative medicine, pharmacogenomics and the neurosciences. Students will learn statistical analysis and biocomputing techniques for the purpose of processing and correctly interpreting the experimental data obtained from the technologies used. The last semester is dedicated to a practical internship. Course work has the purpose of developing themes inherent to the transfer from university to the private and public sectors offering the fundamental principles for the creation of innovative enterprises.

Career options

Second-cycle graduates (Master level) in the medical area will be experts in methods in molecular and cellular biology for the development and use of experimental models (cell cultures, transgenic animals), in molecular diagnostics, and in regenerative medicine. They will be able to work in public and private health facilities and in biotechnological companies. For the purpose of developing the professional expertise of students, laboratory courses are offered in neurosciences, molecular medicine, stem cells and regenerative medicine and biocomputing. These laboratory topics are enriched with elective courses and technological and scientific updating seminars. The program is aimed at promoting internationalization through faculty relations with laboratories of other European and international universities for the purpose of encouraging the mobility of second-cycle students and facilitating their entry into higher level university programs. The program collaborates with biotechnological and pharmaceutical companies that can support professional training and offer employment prospects. Graduates can move into positions of responsibility even at the management level of the abovementioned companies and will also acquire the basic skills to take on entrepreneurial roles in biotechnological companies. They can also work for the protection of intellectual property in patent offices. Finally, graduates can take the State Examination to exercise the profession of Senior Biologist (DPR no. 328 of June 5, 2001).
