The MSc in Medical Biotechnologies is a highly specialized program which offers the possibility to learn and apply the most advanced biomedical and pharmaceutical technologies for the purpose of protecting human health. A considerable part of the program is conducted in world-class research laboratories, equipped with state-of- the art scientific instrumentation and under the supervision of research-active staff. This approach will develop intellectual, practical and transferable skills, as students will obtain a highly sought after postgraduate qualification in the fast-rising sector of biotechnology.

Course content

The course is organized in four semesters, with 11 mandatory courses, a six-month internship period in a laboratory and a final viva voce examination. In the first two semesters, students will study the disciplines that are the core of the biotechnologies applied to human health: physiology, physio- and immune- pathology, structure, function and analysis of the human genome, advanced molecular diagnostic techniques and pharmacogenomics. Students will also learn statistical analysis and biocomputing techniques, for the purpose of processing and correctly interpreting experimental data. At the end of the first year, students can choose to continue their studies in one of the two curricula offered: "Molecular and Regenerative Medicine" or "Personalized Medicine". Both paths will guide towards the most fascinating and innovative aspects of advanced therapies of human diseases, such as stem cell therapy, gene therapy, personalized therapies for cancer or neurodegenerative diseases. The last semester is dedicated to an intensive research activity in a laboratory, which gives you the opportunity to produce a robust scientific argument, to formulate and test hypotheses and to assess contrasting scientific theories. Students are also encouraged to spend some months in laboratories of other European and international universities, where they can learn new techniques or complete their internship period.

Career options

At the end of the course, graduates will be experts in cutting-edge cellular and molecular techniques used in molecular diagnostics, in regenerative medicine, and in designing and optimizing new therapies. Our graduates are highly-regarded for their analytical ability, confidence in critical evaluation, and their competence in interpreting data in a biomedical context. This opens doors to careers in the public and private health facilities, biotech industry, pharma companies and charities. Our MSc program also provides an excellent grounding for those who wish to pursue further academic research at PhD level. Finally, graduates can participate to the State Examination to practice as Biologist in Italy (according to DPR no. 328 of June 5, 2001).
