Presentation
The Department of Biomedical, Metabolic and Neural Sciences was founded on the initiative of teachers and researchers from various disciplines such as Anatomy, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Physiology, Pathology and Psychology, and by clinics in strategically important areas, including Endocrinology, Geriatrics, Metabolic Medicine and Neuroscience.
The strong vocational aspect and ongoing collaboration with leading groups at national and international levels are key points in the development of research, teaching programmes, innovation diagnostics and therapeutic and health organisations. On the scientific front the objectives of the Department are to study the morphology, biochemistry, physiology and pathology of biological processes, as well as to explore the cognitive processes and their neural correlates. Other goals of the Department include the search for new pharmacological approaches and, more generally, research in the therapeutic cardiovascular, endocrine-metabolic, neurological, oncological and skeletal fields.
These lines of research are based on an approach that integrates basic and clinical sciences and methods of study, including experimental approaches in vitro (cellular and molecular systems) and in vivo (animal models and humans). As far as teaching activities are concerned, the Department provides training in most of the basic disciplines, such as Vascular Surgery, Endocrinology, Geriatrics, Neurology, Physical Medicine and important aspects of Internal Medicine for the bachelor’s programme in Health Care, as well as Physiology for all the degree programmes offered by the University. As far as research activities are concerned, the Department carries out research into Neuroscience, and offers a PhD research programme in Clinical Experimental Medicine and Neuroscience and the School of Specialisation in Vascular Surgery, Endocrinology, Medical Pharmacology, Geriatrics, Internal Medicine, Community Medicine, Sports Medicine, Neurology, Science.
Care facilities are provided in order to support the teaching and clinical research. They are located at the New Civil Hospital S. Agostino Estense (NOCSAE: Baggiovara, Modena) and at the Arcispedale S. Maria Nuova, Reggio Emilia.
