Description

The PhD Course offers three curricula: Computer Engineering and Science; Electronics and Telecommunications; Industrial Applications of ICT.

Research topics

The research topics included in the available curricula encompass most of the modern technologies in the fields of information management, electronics and telecommunications.
The “Computer Engineering and Science” curriculum concerns different research areas of computer science and computer engineering, involving both foundational theory (e.g., software principles and software engineering, operating systems, computer networks, databases and information systems), and advanced theories and emerging applications (e.g., business intelligence, internet of things, sensor networks, computer vision and multimedia, adaptive software systems, future internet, cyber security, management and analysis of Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, digital technologies for Industry 4.0, HPC and edge, fog and cloud computing).
The “Electronics and Telecommunications” curriculum focusses on advanced methodologies and applications of electronics and electronic measurements, telecommunications, electronic circuits, electromagnetic propagation, photonics and automation engineering, with special emphasis on key enabling hardware technologies for a variety of broad application domains such as energy efficient electronics, photonics and communications for the IoT, as well as smart sensors for the Internet of Health, robotics and agrifood, electron devices and circuits with conventional and emerging materials (semiconductors, e.g. 2D, SiC, GaN, etc.) for smart and low power and energy for industrial applications and including, but not limited to, new computation paradigms, quantum and approximate computing.
The Curriculum in Industrial Applications of ICT concerns all the scientific disciplines mentioned above but emphasizes the development of new knowledge aimed at satisfying the innovation needs of the industrial sector and job market; it entails developments toward high TRL levels. This curriculum is fact part of the E4E doctoral school which includes, in addition to the other engineering doctorates of the university, the doctorate in economics and work organization.
All the curricula deal with topics concerning Industry 4.0 and Big Data and are fully aligned with the research perspectives outlined by Horizon Europe and the National Programme for Research.

Training goals

The structured educational and research activities allow PhD students to acquire different skills and the ability to understand and develop innovation in the field of Information and Communication Technologies, so that they can cover leading positions in Universities, public or private research organizations, and private manufacturing industries and service companies. A large board of Professors which includes a significant number of prestigious professors from European universities manages the doctoral program and guarantees an optimum balance between sectorial specialization and acquisition of transversal (soft) skills.

Professional perspectives

The PhD Course in ICT promotes both basic research and applied research, as well as technology transfer in cooperation with industrial partners. PhD activities balance methodological aspects with applications, sectorial activities with transversal activities, individual deepening of specific subjects with group presentations and discussion with peer students and tutors. The involvement of industrial partners favors projections toward high TRL levels and the technology transfer of research results, while the University guarantees a high degree of innovation and sound scientific grounds. The importance of the dense network of industrial contacts is testified by the research contracts signed by various companies supporting the doctoral activities.
The Doctoral Program in ICT has been a good source of recruitment for university research staff in this field. The excellent level of training is witnessed by the number and quality of scientific publications as well as by research contracts and collaborations to which PhDs have contributed.
Doctors who have chosen to pursue their professional career have been recruited by industrial research companies and laboratories, operating mainly in the ICT sector. In this case doctoral candidates have been offered qualifying positions, recognizing the doctoral years as past seniority.
Finally, it is important to mention the fact that information technology, telecommunications, automation and their enabling electronic technologies offer various possibilities of use in the advanced services sector, in the manufacturing and biomedical sector.
