Admission requirements

Italian second level degree (“laurea magistrale”, under D.M. 207/04) in the following discipline: LMG/01 Law (or equivalent: Italian second level degree (“laurea specialistica”, under D.M. 509/99) in one of the following disciplines: 22/S Law; 102/S Theory and techniques of normation and legal information; Italian degree in Law obtained prior to D.M. 509/99); or equivalent qualification obtained abroad, in accordance with the provisions in art. 2 of the Call.

Description

The PhD School in Juridical Science is jointly offered by the juridical Departments of the Universities of Modena and Reggio Emilia and Parma. For the XXXVII cycle, the administrative seat is the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.
PhD students will be inserted in one of the research groups of the two partner Universities according to the belonging of their supervisor (tutor), assigned by the board of the PhD School.
The PhD School has institutional agreements with universities and international research bodies in the scientific sectors of the School, in particular with France, Spain and Brazil; in some cases these agreements allow the doctoral student - under certain conditions - to prepare a PhD dissertation in co-tutorship with the Italian and the foreign University.
More generally, international events involving doctoral students are often organized within the scientific relations held by the scholars belonging to the PhD School with several institutions in European and non-European countries. PhD students are strongly encouraged to spend a period of study in a scientific institution abroad.

With regard to the specific training objectives pursued, the PhD program in Juridical Sciences aims to form highly qualified researchers within the areas of reference, and to provide the PhD students with knowledge and skills that can be spent in the main legal professions (lawyer, judge, notary).
As common training objectives, the School aims to promote the theoretical training of the PhD students, through lectures and seminars held by scholars and experts; each student will individually investigate a specific topic in one of the disciplines of reference, under the supervision of a tutor appointed by the board; the School also allows the students to present the result of their research in some scientific events, in Italy and abroad.
The offered training also includes teaching of legal English and the professional use of ICT.

As for job perspectives, the School can provide scientific tools for a wide area of professional sectors within the legal context. The employment perspectives also depend on the scientific area chosen by each student and on the activities related to that area. For example, teaching related to the pluralism of legal systems and legal science mainly aim at forming University researchers, with a strong juridical background and high methodological skills; the training events related to the world of business and of contracts aim at preparing young researchers within private and public research institutions and companies; teaching related to public law may be useful to pursue managerial roles in the public sector, EU institutions, or diplomatic career and journalism.

Students will be placed in the research groups of the two partner universities according to the seat of the supervisor (tutor) that will be assigned by the Faculty Board.

Based on a rigorous selection process, applications are processed normally once a year. The admissions will be open in June or July 2023 (please refer to the Call).
