Description

The Doctorate in ICT intends to offer basic scientific and technological-applicative training aimed at the study and design of new concepts, methodologies and technologies in the electronic, computer and telecommunication fields. The Doctorate in ICT is oriented towards internationalization, an aspect guaranteed not only by the quality of its international members of the faculty, but also by the research agreements that have been entered into with foreign universities that offer students the opportunity to do research activities abroad within international laboratories, and to earn double doctoral degrees.

The PhD in ICT is also oriented to the research and development needs of industry, as evidenced by the high number of research topics funded by companies and the presence of a representative from an important Italian industry (DM 226/2021).

The course is divided into 3 curricula: Computer Engineering and Science; Electronics and Telecommunications; Industrial applications of ICT. All the activities of the course are carried out in English.

Research topics

The research scientific topics included in these three areas offer the student a complete picture of modern technologies oriented to the processing of information and telecommunications.

The Computer Engineering and Science Curriculum covers various research areas of Computer Science and Computer Engineering, both concerning basic theory (such as software fundamentals and software engineering, operating systems, computer networks, databases and information systems), both advanced theories and emerging applications (such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Deep Learning, the Internet of Things, sensor networks, artificial vision, multimedia, adaptive software systems, the internet of the future, Cybersecurity, Big Data management and analysis techniques, Industry 4.0 digital technologies, HPC and edge, fog and cloud computing).

The Electronics and Telecommunications Curriculum focuses on the foundations and state-of-the-art application developments of electronics, electronic devices and measurements, telecommunications, electrical engineering, electromagnetism, electrical machines and drives, photonics and automation, with particular attention to hardware technologies enabling wide application domains including electronics, photonics and energy-efficient communications for the IoT world, radar systems, intelligent sensors for the Internet of Health, robotics and agrifood, electronic devices and circuits based on conventional and emerging materials (semiconductors) (2D, SiC, GaN, etc.) for the intelligent management of power and energy, both in the industrial field and for new paradigms of computation, quantum and approximate computing. The Industrial Applications of ICT Curriculum covers all the scientific disciplines mentioned above but emphasizes the development of new knowledge aimed at responding to the innovation needs of the industrial fabric and the labor market, including developments up to high TRLs. This curriculum is in fact included in the E4E Doctoral School which includes, in addition to the other engineering doctorates of the university, the doctorate in Labour, Development and Innovation.

All curricula will address issues of interest to Industry 4.0 and Big Data and are fully inserted in the research scenarios defined by Horizon Europe and the National Research Plan.

Educational objectives

The structured training offer and the research activities of the Course aim at training people with a high ability to understand and develop research and innovation in the field of information technologies, and able to cover qualified roles in public and private research organizations, manufacturing industries, institutions and service companies, including the University. A large Board of Professors that includes a significant number of prestigious professors from European universities manage the training course of the doctorate, ensuring a correct balance between sector specialization and the acquisition of transversal (soft) skills.

Professional prospects

The ICT PhD program promotes both basic and applied research and technology transfer in collaboration with industrial partners and service companies. The activities carried out by the doctoral students balance methodological and application aspects, sectoral focus and acquisition of transversal soft skills, individual study and comparison within the community of doctoral students and tutors. The involvement of industrial partners favors the projection towards high TRLs and the technological transfer of research results, while the University guarantees the innovation and scientific solidity of the activity. The importance of the network of collaborations in the industrial field is evidenced by the research contracts stipulated by various companies to support the activities of the doctorate.

The Doctoral Program in ICT guarantees an excellent level of training, as evidenced by the former students (see web page dedicated to the website www.ict.unimore.it), the number and quality of scientific publications, research contracts and collaborations in which PhD students have participated and have contributed systematically over the years. The doctors who chose to pursue a professional career were hired by companies and industrial research laboratories in the ICT sector, where they held qualified positions recognizing the years of the doctorate as previous seniority. Finally, it is important to mention the fact that electronics, information technology, telecommunications, automation offer various possibilities of use even in the advanced tertiary sector, in manufacturing districts, including the biomedical sector.
