Brief content description
In recent years, extensive collections of data have been made available in various fields, including economics, business, industry and finance. In order to characterize and predict many phenomena of interest, we are required to make sense out of massive amounts of variables repeatedly observed. In such contexts characterized by uncertainty, reliable predictions and accurate inferences are crucial for effective decision- making. This class teaches the principles of data analysis from a statistical perspective and introduces students to their practice. The emphasis is placed on explorative data analysis, statistical model building and prediction in univariate and multivariate problems. The core theoretical concepts are presented rigorously throughout the course, but much more effort is devoted to develop problem-solving skills by analysing real data sets in class.
